Federal funds for BC Scrap-It

Ottawa- Over the next four years, the Government of Canada will offer Canadians $92 million in incentives to retire their 1995 or older model vehicles Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Chuck Strahl announced.

The program, to be delivered by the Clean Air Foundation, will start in January 2009. It is designed to encourage people to scrap their gas-guzzling vehicles in favour of a more environmentally friendly transportation. The incentives include:

  • public transit passes;
  • bicycles;
  • a rebate on the purchase of a new car;
  • membership in a car-sharing program; or
  • $300 cash.

Vehicles manufactured before new environmental standards were introduced in 1996 produce about 19 times more air pollutants than newer model cars and trucks. Although these vehicles make up less than one-third of the vehicles on the road, they generate as much as two-thirds of the smog-forming pollutants caused by personal vehicle use.

"Canadians can do a great deal of good for the environment simply by getting rid of their older cars." Strahl added, "These incentives will go a long way in improving air quality."

Until the program is up and running Strahl explained the Government of Canada will provide $3.4 million in funding to local vehicle scrappage programs across the country including BC Scrap-It.

BC Scrap-It was the first vehicle scrappage program aimed at retiring old, licensed, insured and running vehicles in the country. Since 1996, other not-for-profit organizations have been introduced across Canada.

"A tough National Car Recycling Code of Practice will ensure the recycling is done in an environmentally friendly matter," Strahl added.
